Video Contest Winner:QUALITY EDUCATION

A symposium on Quality Education and Academic Freedom in Ontario Colleges was held at Ryerson University in Toronto on June 1, with over 70 registrants including BC and Manitoba. One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the winner of the OPSEU contest, which was open to all bargaining unit members (partial-load and full-time) Ontario college faculty and students.

It is my pleasure to inform you that our local won the competition with its QUALITY EDUCATION submission, which was produced by Peter Biesterfield, Professor/Co-ordination, Documentary Production Program, School of Media and Design. Mike Nauth and Marie Durocher were on hand to accept the award for the local.

The local’s submission can be viewed on YouTube using the following link http://youtu.be/4CWjwSyooDE.

The local thanks Peter for his excellent production and all the faculty who assisted him in this production.

Academic Negotiations 2012-Bargaining Update June5,2012-Initial Proposal

Attached here and here are the Union’s proposals tabled with the Employers Council today. There is a covering three- page overview which captures the 28 demands passed at the provincial demand setting meeting, and a 14 page document which provides draft contract language to achieve those demands.

The colleges have not yet provided an electronic version of their non-monetary proposals which they have tabled. The colleges will not table their monetary proposals until later in the negotiations process. Monetary proposals include salary and benefits.

The faculty team has not yet tabled a salary proposal but has advised the college that our proposal will be in keeping with the Ontario comparator group settlements and on-going negotiations.

As soon as we receive an electronic version of the employers’ opening proposals we will forward that to you.

In solidarity,

The Bargaining Team
